Making the Perfect Smoothie

When you need something quick and easy, nutritious smoothies are a great way to go.

Some of the concoctions I’ve come up with have tasted amazing and some, well…they had a striking resemblance (and flavour!) to mud. But did I dump them? No way! Too many valuable nutrients to send down the drain.

Did I learn from my experiments? You bet. Over time and with experience, my smoothies have improved a great deal and are always loaded with nutrients. Now most of the time my taste buds are happy, belly is satisfied, brain is focused and muscles are ready to train.

One secret ingredient I like to use is raw cacao. Cacao is the purest form of chocolate you can consume.

Cacao powder has had very little processing in comparison to cocoa powder. Less processing equals more nutrients.

Cacao nibs are cacao beans that have been chopped into small pieces and retain all of the fibre, fat and nutrients.

  • a rich source of magnesium, which helps with proper nerve and muscle function and a healthy heart rhythm
  • a source of fibre and iron
  • high in antioxidants
  • a mood elevator 🙂

Here are a few tips and ideas to help you learn to make the perfect smoothie.

Berry Smoothie Bowl

All the goodness of a smoothie but you eat it with a spoon. Cool, creamy & delicious!

Total Time 5 mins
Servings 1 serving

Ingredients
  

  • 1 cup frozen fruit (preferably berries)
  • 1/4 avocado
  • 1/2 to 3/4 cup liquid (start with ½ and add as needed)
  • 3/4 to 1 scoop Vanilla or Chocolate protein powder
  • 1 Tbsp nut or seed butter
  • 4-5 ice cubes

Instructions
 

  • Put all ingredients in blender, pulse then blend to desired thickness.  Put mixture in bowl, sprinkle with your favourite flavours and ENJOY!

Optional Toppings

  • Cacao nibs
    Unsweetened coconut
